Nail biting

Nail biting is an unhealthy and socially unacceptable habit, like sucking your thumb or cracking your knuckles. They are bad habits, we try and try to stop, we know it is bad for us but we cannot stop. Are we addicted or is there something else?

Scientists have tried to find out why we have habits; they think maybe it has something to do with genetics which is the code that makes us who we are. This is often called nature. More than likely our habits come from the environment and we learn them in the same way we learn to read or write, this is often called nurture.

Some people have habits that they do when they are nervous, for example biting our nails or playing with our rings. Some people have habits that help to pass the time like cleaning or smoking. A habit is okay but when that habit moves into an obsession then we may need help.

What can we do to break bad habits? Research is showing that it takes on average 66 (sixty-six) days to stop the bad habit by concentrating on a more positive or productive one. This is not an easy task and can be very overwhelming. Make a commitment to yourself, and make a plan of how you will quit.

Union Jack

The Union flag or Union Jack is the official flag of Great Britain (The UK). The flag was first used by James I in 1603 (sixteen zero three), when he was the King of England, Scotland and Wales.

This flag was a very important because it was the first time in history that these countries were under the same flag. There are some rules about when the flag can be used on UK government buildings: currently, the flag can only be flown on the special day like the Queen’s birthday. The laws have changed which means the flag can be flown more often.

Presentations

My knees were shaking, my mouth was dry. Twenty (20) people were looking at me waiting for me to speak. “As you can see from this photograph….” I dropped my carefully prepared lecture notes on the floor, kneeling down to collect them. I bumped into the lecture stand. At this point, I wanted to run away. This was the first presentation I had to give and still today I hate speaking in public.

Here are some tips to follow:

  • Talk to your audience: give eye contact
  • Less is more: Don´t say too much or give too much information.
  • Be logical: have a beginning, middle and end.
  • Practice and time your presentation: Take a deep breath. Practice saying your speech and time it to see how long it is. Maybe even record it.
  • Pictures: Show only a few photos or graphs. Don´t overdo it.

The Royal National Lifeboat Association

The Royal National Lifeboat Association is the organisation responsible for saving lives around the British coast and rivers. The Lifeboat Association was opened in 1824 and called National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck.

The Royal National Lifeboat Association has 237 (two hundred and thirty seven) lifeboat stations, a lifeboat station is a building built to hold a lifeboat, nowadays a few have slipways, which is a long ramp used so that boats can enter the water quickly.

The majority of lifeboats are either permanently in a dock or harbour or launched using a tractor and trailer. The Association also has 444 (four hundred and four) lifeboats, which include ocean going boats such as the Tamar-class lifeboat or inshore lifeboats such as D-class.

Housework

Chores and housework duties are very important for keeping a house clean. But have you ever thought about who does the most housework? A new survey may answer the question for us.

This survey sent questionnaires to different groups. The groups included women living on their own, married couples, couples with kids and older couples. The survey also compared the same groups to 30 (thirty) years ago.

The graph says that married women with children do more housework than any other group and that married women without children also does a lot of housework. Man both married and married with children do the least amount of housework.

The graph also says that in comparison to 1967, women do slightly less now than they did. This means that men do help out but maybe not as much as they should. Men are sometimes better at fixing things or maintaining the garden.
